THE MATHEMATICAL MIND: Why the Universe Obeys Our Logic
Description
"The most incomprehensible thing about the universe is that it is comprehensible." In this lecture, we trace the history of "Cosmic Comprehensibility" from the pioneers of the Scientific Revolution to modern Nobel Prize winners in physics.
We begin with Johannes Kepler, who believed that by discovering mathematical laws, we are literally "sharing in God's own thoughts." We then leap into the 20th century to see how Max Planck, Albert Einstein, and Eugene Wigner grappled with the "miraculous" fact that the laws of human reasoning coincide perfectly with the laws of the physical world. Finally, we explore Roger Penrose’s "Three Worlds" problem—the mysterious loop between the Platonic mathematical realm, the physical world, and the human mind. Is this grand harmony a happy accident, or does it point to a deeper metaphysical reality?
Speaker: author and humanities scholar Melissa Cain Travis.
