Carbon, Water, and Luck? The Recipe for a Living World
Description
Is the Earth typical or atypical? Many assume that if you have a planet, you have a home for life—but the data suggests otherwise. In this deep dive into planetary science, we look at why "terrestrial" planets (the ones made of dirt) are so rare, making up only about 4% of discovered exoplanets.
We explore the Circumstellar Habitable Zone—the narrow "Goldilocks" strip where water can remain liquid. Move the Earth just a few percent closer to the sun, and you trigger a runaway greenhouse effect that boils the oceans and strips away the atmosphere. Move it just a few percent further, and you end up with a "Snowball Earth." From the unique chemistry of carbon to the stability of our G-type star, we’re breaking down the astronomical odds that allow us to exist.
Speaker: Physicist Bijan Nemati.
