Why Faith Alone Was Never Enough Without Christ’s Sacrifice
Description
Since Old Testament Jews and Gentiles could be justified by faith apart from works, it seems there was already a path for salvation in place, so why was it necessary for Jesus to come?
Greg Koukl and Amy Hall explain that faith itself does not save, because faith has no power apart from the work of Christ. Old Testament sacrifices and acts of trust functioned like a credit card, granting present benefit based on a payment still to come. Scripture teaches God “passed over” previous sins because he always planned to uphold justice through Jesus’ sacrifice. The Mosaic system pointed forward to the one true atonement, since the blood of bulls and goats could never remove guilt. Jesus’ death is the only true satisfaction for sin, which is why the New Testament leaves no room for salvation apart from him.
