Temporary Marriages, Permanent Damage: An Academic Examines the Rise of Misyar Marriage
Description
Thanks to Mohammed Hijab, we've been hearing a lot about misyar marriage recently. The publicity might be new, but the trend isn't. Misyar and other temporary marriages have been on the rise in the Islamic world for the past 20 years. The reasons are varied: for poor families, it is a way to make money by selling their daughters into prostitution. For married men, it is a "halal" way to cheat on their wives. And for the youth, misyar is being used for "hilal hookups" - that is, casual sex without the stigma of premarital sex. Mary Harb joins me to discuss an academic paper discussing the implications.
