In conversation with John G. West, renowned surgeon Dr. Ben Carson shares his view that faith and science are not in conflict, and that believing in evolution requires more faith than believing in God as creator. Carson critiques Darwin’s theory by pointing to cellular complexity and the impossibility of gradual evolution for interconnected systems like hearing and vision. Drawing on his neurosurgical experience, Carson emphasizes that all human brains are fundamentally of the same kind regardless of race, noting that all of our brains are of the same fundamental kind. As the Declaration of Independence puts it, “all men are created equal.” He also encourages young people of faith entering science to arm themselves with facts and refuse to back down when challenged. Free speech and open disagreement are essential to scientific progress. Finally, Carson calls for Americans to unite around shared values rather than allow themselves to be divided by race, politics, or religion.
This conversation took place at the 2026 Dallas Conference on Science and Faith, an annual event by Discovery Institute's Center for Science & Culture.
