Biochemist Michael Behe examines Richard Lenski’s long-term E. coli experiments and explains how losing or reducing a gene’s function can benefit bacteria in a particular laboratory environment. He presents what he calls the “first rule of adaptive evolution” as a rule of thumb, rather than a universal law, and uses a car-weight analogy to illustrate his argument.
