Is Islam a Religion of Peace?

3.70 out of 5 stars

Description

This is a question that sparks heated debate, with opinions divided along stark lines. But to get to the heart of the matter, we must first ask: who has the authority to speak on behalf of Islam? This journal delves into the Islamic doctrine of "lesser jihad," a binding obligation for all Muslims, as well as the religion's treatment of women. Islam's foundation lies in the Quran, the alleged revelation from Allah, and the practices of the Prophet Muhammad. One article explores the expansion of the Muslim community and its domination, which was largely achieved through military conquest during Muhammad's lifetime and that of his successors. Another article reveals how the Quran's initially peaceful verses towards Christians and Jews were later superseded by "verses of the sword." The mistreatment of women is another manifestation of Islamic violence, with a basis in the Quran and Islamic history. While the degree of abuse varies among Muslim communities, it is perpetuated under fundamentalist Sharia law. In response to Muslim justifications of jihad as self-defense, one article argues that this comparison is flawed. The biblical account of the Israelites' conquest of the Promised Land, for instance, was a specific judgment against idolaters and a means of protecting God's people, rather than a paradigm for violence. In conclusion, is Islam a peaceful religion? The answer, rooted in scripture, history, and spirituality, is a resounding no.
